“Do you still love me?” he asked, after their latest blowup.

Her jaws were clenched as she looked off into the distance. She took a deep breath, but didn’t reply.

He could hear the ringing in his ears very clearly as he waited for her answer. They had been through a lot together: 30 years of marriage, kids, serious illness, deaths and money woes.

When the long silence became uncomfortable, he raised his voice. “Do you love me or not? There are only two possibilities: yes or no.”

She blinked, as if waking from a trance, turned to him and sighed. “Maybe,” she said. “Maybe.”
